Genera PR Seeks to Install 565 MW in Puerto Rico

Reports related to this article:

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Genera PR LLC (San Juan, Puerto Rico), a subsidiary of New Fortress Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:NFE) (New York, New York), has requested permission from the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) for the installation of 565 megawatts (MW) of short-term temporary thermal capacity to be installed in different generation plants under its responsibility. Genera PR is in charge of the operation and maintenance of the thermal generation plants of Puerto Rico's state-owned PREPA GenCo.

The company already has 340 MW of temporary generation in operation until December 2025; but a recently published report by transmission and distribution network operator Luma Energy LLC establishes the need to increase that capacity to 905 MW. The new capacity would be installed in the Cambalache (40 MW), San Juan (100 MW), Aguirre (260 MW) and Yabucoa, Costa Sur and Jobos plants, with 55 MW each.

Since taking over PREPA's generation plants, Genera PR has announced investments of about US$800 million in projects to recover, repair and expand PREPA's generation fleet. These projects are mainly financed with funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and are in different stages of planning, engineering, procurement and execution.

The projects include the installation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with an aggregate capacity of 430 MW to be able to inject up to 1,720 MWh of electricity into the grid for up to four hours per day. The units would be installed in nine plants; Genera PR is close to awarding engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts and adjusting financing details with FEMA and PREPA. The first unit, 50 MW, is expected to start operating at the Vega Baja plant in mid-2025.

Energy storage systems are an efficient solution to sustain the electricity supply in crisis situations such as the hurricanes that usually hit the island each year. Along with the 430 MW under development by Genera PR, another 600 MW are in different stages of development by different private companies to be built together with new photovoltaic projects.

Luma Energy, for its part, is developing its "Accelerated Storage Addition Program" (ASAP) that seeks to promote the installation of 360 MW of BESS capacity in different private generation plants. According to reports by Luma Energy, within the next 12 years, 185 MW could be installed; while the remaining 175 MW could be installed in a later second phase.
