Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Genneia (Buenos Aires) has inaugurated its eighth windfarm project in Argentina.

Genneia has announced the start of operations of its La Elbita windfarm in Tandil, Buenos Aires province. The project has a capacity to generate 162 megawatts (MW) through its 36 wind turbines.

The windfarm will produce 705,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year, powering the consumption of 175,000 homes and saving 370,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

La Elbita is located 42 kilometers from the city of Tandil.

The project required investments of US$240 million, financed through the FMO Dutch Development Bank and FinDev Canada, which loaned the company US$85 million over 10 years. Locally, investors also financed the development through the purchase of green bonds.

"We are proud to announce the start of operations at the La Elbita Wind Farm, a key project that reinforces our commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development in Argentina. The launch of this wind farm in the town of Tandil, province of Buenos Aires, represents a new step in our effort to reduce emissions and promote a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix," highlighted Bernardo Andrews, chief executive officer of Genneia.

Genneia has a portfolio of eight windfarms, five solar projects and two thermal plants at different development stages across Argentina. Currently, the renewable energy company represents around 20% of the solar and wind capacity in the South American country with over 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed capacity. Wind energy alone represents 946 MW of the company's capacity, while it also continues to develop other projects.
