Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--This month, Parque Eolico SAPEM (La Rioja, Argentina) inaugurated the 25.1-megawatt (MW) Phase III of the Arauco windfarm, located 20 kilometers south of Aimogasta city, in the La Rioja province of Argentina. With the start of Phase III operations, the windfarm reached a generating capacity of 50.2 MW. The first and second phases were inaugurated by the Argentinean government in May 2011.

The windfarm is equipped with 24 IWP-83 IMPSA (Mendoza, Argentina) wind turbine generators, each with a generating capacity of 2.1 MW. IMPSA won an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract and was responsible for the supply, installation and assembly of the wind generators and the construction of the park.

The three-phase construction had an estimated investment of $120 million. The energy will be delivered to the local grid.

Based on preliminary engineering studies, Parque Eolico SAPEM plans to add 150 MW to the actual generating capacity, reaching 200 MW of wind energy in La Rioja. IMPSA won the turn-key contract for the construction of Phase IV. With an investment of $98 million, the windfarm will have a generating capacity of 100.8 MW. According to the company, the scheduled start of construction is planned for the first semester of 2014, and the completion is expected for 2015.

Apart from the culmination of Phase III, there are other windfarms in commercial operations in Argentina, such as the 51-MW Loma facility, owned by Isolux Corsan Argentina S.A. (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and the 77-MW Rawson windfarm, owned by Genneia S.A. (Buenos Aires). All of these projects belong to the Renewable Energies Program (Genren), which was put forward by state energy company Enarsa and the Ministry of Federal Planning in 2010.
