Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--German Pellets of Louisiana LLC (Urania, Louisiana), a subsidiary of German Pellets GmbH (Wismar, Germany), is nearing completion of its second wood fuel pellet manufacturing plant, located in Urania, Louisiana.
German Pellets expects the mill to be running by the end of the second quarter. The plant is located at the site of the former Georgia-Pacific (Atlanta, Georgia) wood panel mill, which closed in 2002. Urania, which has a population of 800, lost 352 jobs when the wood panel mill closed. The new mill is expected to employ 80 to 100 people.
The plant is being built by Southern Industrial Contractors (Rayville, Louisiana). The total investment value of the project $350 million.
The plant will have a production capacity of 1 million tons per year of fuel pellets. The pellets will be shipped 210 miles to Port Arthur, Texas, and loaded on vessels at a rate of 45,000 tons per shipment, where they will go to Germany, the U.K. and other European posts.
The company's other plant is located in Woodville, Texas. The Woodville plant completed an expansion in April 2014, and has a nameplate capacity of 578,000 tons per year.
Currently, there are five major pellet mill projects in Louisiana, representing nearly $740 million in capital spending through late 2016. Two projects in Morehouse and Natchitoches parishes already have broken ground.
