Global Automotive Supplier to Build New Plant in Alabama

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Lear Corporation (NYSE:LEA) (Southfield, Michigan), a global supplier of automotive seating systems and electrical power management systems, is planning to build a new $19.6 million manufacturing plant in Brookwood, Alabama, that will make automotive seats and seating frames for the Mercedes Benz auto assembly plant in Vance, Alabama.

Plans are to construct a 170,000-square-foot building on a 30-acre site that will manufacture seating for the Mercedes C-Class sedans, which will start production in 2014, as well as metal seating frames for the Mercedes M-Class and GL-Class sport utility vehicles. The new plant is expected to have an initial annual production capacity of 77,000 seating units for the C-Class and 150,000 seating frames for the other Mercedes SUVs. At this time, no permits have been issued and a general contractor has not been selected. A groundbreaking ceremony occurred in March of this year. Construction is anticipated to begin in the third quarter of this year, with operations starting in the spring of 2013. Approximately 100 new jobs will be created once the new plant becomes operational.

The new plant will be the company's fourth plant in Alabama. Lear Corporation currently has more than 200 plants worldwide and approximately 110,000 employees.
