Summary
Developers of two North American green ammonia projects made moves regarding equipment procurement last week, with one selecting an electrolyzer provider and the other issuing an RFP for equipment.Equipment Procurement
Last week, two North American green ammonia projects made moves in regard to procuring equipment. For a project in Quebec, the Canadian branch of Germany's Hy2gen has contracted Plug Power to supply a 275-megawatt (MW) protein exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system for its plant. In Texas, First Ammonia issued a request for proposals (RFP) for electrolysis equipment needed for a plant at the Port of Victoria.Hy2gen's Quebec Project
Industrial Info released an initial report on Hy2gen's plans for a green ammonia project in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, in 2023. The company once again is collaborating with Plug Power on this project and aims to produce more than 230,000 metric tons per year of green ammonia for markets such as ammonium nitrate for mining explosives and fertilizers. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report. The two companies signed a previous agreement in December when Plug agreed to provide a 5-MW protein exchange membrane electrolyzer to Hy2gen's Sunrhyse green hydrogen project in France.
The 275-MW electrolyzer contract for the Quebec plant comes as a much-needed win for Plug Power, which has had to scale back its U.S. operations, most notably canceling the New York construction of what was intended to be North America's largest green hydrogen plant. First Ammonia's Texas Project
First Ammonia's green ammonia project at the Port of Victoria, Texas, is less advanced in its progress after being derailed from an initial equipment procurement contract, but the company is once again on track to begin serious considerations for electrolyzers and related equipment. The project faced a setback when a previous equipment-supply contract with Danish company Topsoe fell through. The break came from Topsoe's side after First Ammonia failed to pass a series of project milestones by certain deadlines. After the contract cancellation, which happened late last month, First Ammonia reaffirmed its intentions to see the project through, promising a 2026 final investment decision (FID) on the project.
A key component in that FID will be the terms that First Ammonia is able to make for an initial 200 MW of electrolysis capacity as well as further downstream equipment for the green hydrogen-to-green ammonia process. Industrial Info's GMI Project Database shows an expected completion date in 2028 if construction is able to get off the ground by early 2027. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Key Takeaways
- Germany's H2gen has selected Plug Power to supply 275 MW of electrolyzer equipment to a planned green ammonia plant in Quebec, while First Ammonia has issued an RFP for equipment for a Texas green ammonia project.
- Plug Power is supplying another electrolyzer for a Hy2gen project in France.
- First Ammonia had to break an equipment-supply contract with Denmark's Topsoe and is now relaunching the process. The company hopes to have an FID on the Texas project this year.
