Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Holcim US Incorporated, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim Limited (Switzerland), recently started up cement production at a cement plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, following a $96 million modernization.
One of the largest industrial projects in Maryland in recent years, the modernization helps the plant meet NESHAP environmental regulation, reducing NOx by greater than 60%, sulfur dioxide emissions by 50% and particulates by 75%. The company signed a consent decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for emissions violations in 2013, with the aim of significantly modifying the plant to reduce emissions. Construction started on the project in 2014.
Leading kiln technology supplier KHD Humboldt Wedag (Cologne, Germany) provided the new preheater kiln technology and equipment. Gebr. Pfeiffer (Kaiserslautern, Germany) provided a new vertical roller mill.
First reported by Industrial Info in 2013, the modernization also increases capacity of the kiln by 200,000 tons per year, bringing cement capacity up to about 750,000 tons per year.
