Summary

Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than $420 million worth of current U.S. construction activity related to household appliance manufacturing, and another $2 billion worth of construction planned for the future.

An Everyday Part of Life

Household appliances dominate U.S. life, ranging from everything to coffeemakers, refrigerators and toasters to vacuum cleaners and laundry appliances to microwaves and ovens. And U.S. manufacturers are standing by with steady list of current and new construction projects--primarily expansions and additions at existing plants.

Industrial Info Resources data show more than $424 million worth of current construction projects related to household appliance manufacturing, and more than $2 billion worth planned for a future date, although not all of these will move forward as planned.

On-the-Ground Appliance Construction

One of the largest projects being tracked comes from South Korea's LG Corporation, which is expanding its plant in Clarksville, Tennessee, which currently manufactures a range of the company's clothes washers and dryers. A 560,000-square-foot building addition will lead to the production of the LG's refrigerators and ovens in the future. Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of this year.

Elsewhere, a push for renewed U.S. manufacturing may be behind Roper Corporation's (a GE subsidiary) move to upgrade its plant in LaFayette, Georgia, to house a new production line for gas ranges. Roper manufactures ranges for brands such as GE and Monogram, and the new production line will allow the company to relocate production from Mexico. Work on the project kicked off earlier this and is expected to be completed this autumn.

Monogram itself is retrofitting a plant in Selmer, Tennessee, to allow for the manufacture of two new models of air-conditioning units.

Future Construction

Even more U.S. appliance manufacturing construction projects loom on the horizon, again mostly in the form of additions, expansions and retrofits of existing plants. One of the key players in future project activity is foundational U.S. manufacturer Whirlpool, which is planning equipment additions at separate washer and dryer plants. The larger project is set to kick off later this summer at Whirlpool's washing machine plant in Clyde, Ohio. At the same time, Whirlpool also will be upgrading equipment and systems at its dryer plant in nearby Marion, Ohio. The projects at both plants are expected to be completed toward the end of this year or in early 2027.

One of the most anticipated projects is a large-scale upgrade and retrofit project at GE Appliances' plant in Louisville, Kentucky, that will relocate production lines for clothes washers and dryers from China to the U.S. The project is set to break ground later this year, putting it on track to wrap up by the end of next year.

Key Takeaways
  • Industrial Info Resources is tracking $424 million worth of U.S. construction projects related to household appliance manufacturing.
  • Whirlpool and GE Appliances are among the companies with the largest spending plans for future projects.
