Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Household appliance factories play a crucial role in the production of the many devices that contribute to the convenience and efficiency of daily life. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.5 billion in active projects at U.S. factories that manufacture appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines and more.
One of the largest projects involving an appliance-manufacturing plant was announced only last month. Premium appliance manufacturer Miele (Gütersloh, Germany) has set its sights on Opelika, Alabama, to expand its presence in the U.S., which is the company's largest market outside of Germany.
Miele initially will occupy an existing 180,000-square-foot building in the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park, performing necessary building renovations that are expected to begin this summer and last into early next year. After gaining a foothold in the area, Miele will launch an even larger project: a 620,000-square-foot building with production equipment to further increase manufacturing. While Miele has not stated which specific appliances would be manufactured at the Opelika site, the company manufactures a range of appliances, including coffee makers, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, dishwashers and cooking ranges. The Miele projects help the U.S. Southeast market region dominate spending on appliance projects. Other projects in the region include LG Corporation's equipment addition at its washer and dryer plant in Clarksville, Tennessee. LG is installing a new dryer assembly line at the plant, which was completed in 2018 and underwent renovation in 2021. The project is in its early construction stages and is expected to be completed later this year.
Also in Tennessee, MECO Corporation (Greeneville, Tennessee) is expanding its Greenville plant to increase its production of grills and steel folding furniture. The project kicked off last summer and is expected to be completed in the coming months.

Outside of the Southeast, the U.S. Midwest garners the highest spending for appliance-manufacturing projects, thanks largely to a grassroot plant under construction in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Sub-Zero Group Incorporated (Madison, Wisconsin) manufactures refrigerators and other appliances for home and commercial use under the Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove brands. General contractor C.D. Smith Construction Incorporated (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) broke ground on the new Cedar Rapids plant in September.
The project entails constructing a 400,000-square-foot building to house new manufacturing operations and is expected to be completed in August 2025. To obtain the state's incentive package, the 192 jobs expected to be created by the plant must be filled by December 2026. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
In addition to the many capital projects, Industrial Info is tracking more than 20 planned maintenance projects at U.S. appliance plants. The biggest spender on maintenance is Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) (Benton Harbor, Michigan), which has five active maintenance projects being tracked by IIR that are located in Oklahoma, Iowa and Ohio. Most of these projects are for routine maintenance programs set to last the entire year. This year, for example, Whirlpool will launch a maintenance program at its refrigerator manufacturing plant in Amana, Iowa, which will include weekly maintenance shutdowns as needed.
