Incitec Pivot to Close Australia Fertilizer Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL) has announced the closure of its Gibson Island fertilizers plant in Australia at the end of 2022 after the company was unable to secure an affordable long-term gas supply agreement. Gas feedstock from Australia Pacific LNG will meet the facility's needs until December 2022.

The 50-year-old manufacturing plant has the capacity to produce 300,000 tons per year (T/yr) of ammonia, 280,000 T/yr of urea and 200,000 T/yr of ammonium sulfate. The company will still continue its manufacturing operations at the Phosphate Hill and Geelong sites. IPL has teamed up with Fortescue Future Industries for a feasibility study for a hydrogen project at Gibson Island to possibly repurpose the site. The potential investment would produce around 50,000 T/yr green hydrogen, which would be converted into green ammonia.
