Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL) (Southbank, Australia) and Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) (East Perth, Australia) are advancing their Gibson Island green ammonia project to front-end engineering design (FEED), with the support of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
Last year, IPL announced that the Gibson Island fertilizer plant would cease operation by the end of 2022 due to high methane gas feedstock costs, and was considering using green hydrogen to produce ammonia. With the use of a 500-megawatt electrolyzer, it could produce 70,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen, which would be supplied to the existing Gibson Island fertilizer plant for the production of as much as 400,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia.
FFI and IPL are set to make a final investment decision on the project by 2023, and are targeting first production by 2025.
