Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--State-owned THDC India Limited, a subsidiary of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, has announced the synchronization of the first 250-megawatt (MW) unit of its Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in pump condenser mode, a significant milestone for India's power sector. Located in Tehri, Uttarakhand, this development marks India's first variable-speed pumped storage facility and one of only three in Asia.

The Tehri PSP is designed to convert surplus off-peak energy into peaking power, contributing significantly to grid stability and energy reliability. By operating in both pumping and generating modes, it acts as a dynamic reserve for the grid, especially during high demand periods. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project and Plant databases can click here for the project report and click here for the plant profile.

The project is also India's first to implement a voltage source inverter (VSI)-based excitation system, enabling rapid switching between operating modes and enhanced voltage regulation. This technology, while 30--40% more expensive than traditional fixed-speed systems, offers superior operational flexibility and resilience.

When fully commissioned, the Tehri hydropower complex will have a capacity of 2,400 MW, including the existing 1,000-MW Tehri Hydro Power Plant and the 400-MW Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project. THDC, a joint venture between NTPC (75%) and the Government of Uttar Pradesh (25%), aims to play a central role in India's clean energy future.

Industrial Info is tracking 1,319 hydro projects in India, worth US$450.82 billion. Subscribers can click here for the project reports.
