Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Thanks largely to some blockbuster projects, the value of industrial construction presently underway in Indiana and tracked by Industrial Info exceeds $39 billion. The projects cover a range of sectors from pharmaceutical-biotech projects to cutting-edge data centers.

By far the largest project presently underway in the state is pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company's (NYSE:LLY) (Indianapolis, Indiana) expansion of its campus in Lebanon, about 30 miles from Lilly's headquarters in Indianapolis. The project broke ground in the summer of 2023, with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) leading the work. The new 352,000-square-foot building will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-Gold certified and will house equipment to manufacture some of the active pharmaceutical ingredients for some of Lilly's most important drugs. The project is expected to be completed in early 2027, but Fluor also is underway with a 220,000-square-foot building to develop cell and gene therapies that is expected to be completed toward end of that year. Eli Lilly's spending in Indiana amounts to more than $8 billion over the course of a few years. Other multibillion projects in the state involve the automotive sector, specifically the manufacture of the batteries that power electric vehicles (EVs). Both General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) (GM) (Detroit, Michigan) and Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) (Hoofddorp, Netherlands) are constructing battery plants in the state, resulting in approximately $6 billion worth of spending over multiple years. The larger price tag of the GM plant reflects its higher production capacity. GM's 2.5 million-square-foot plant in New Carlisle will begin ramping up to production of 30 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of batteries annually when completed in late 2027. The plant will raise GM's total U.S. battery production capacity to about 160 GWh per year.

Despite the larger size of Stellantis' new campus in Kokomo, the facility will produce approximately 23 GWh of batteries annually. Construction began in early 2023 (about a year before the GM plant), and work on the 3.3 million square feet of new buildings and structures is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on the GM and Stellantis projects.

Amazon has been on a data center-building spree in the Great Lakes region, with billions of dollars being invested in Ohio and Indiana. For more information, see December 18, 2024, article - Amazon Furthers Investment in Ohio Data Centers. The location of Amazon Web Services' Indiana ambitions is near New Carlisle, where the GM battery plant is being constructed. Amazon will invest approximately $11 billion in the property, which will feature around 16 buildings of more than 200,000 square feet each. According to a release from the South Bend Tribune, Amazon planned to have four buildings completed by the end of this year, and the data center will have the latest capabilities in artificial intelligence. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

But that's not all Amazon is up to in Indiana. Catering to its e-commerce side, the company is underway with Project Winnie, a five-story, 4 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Elkhart, in the north of the state near the Michigan border. The robotics-enhanced facility is expected to begin operations next year. Subscribers can click here for more details on the project.

Indiana also has a prominent agricultural sector, which is demonstrated in Bunge Limited's (Chesterfield, Missouri) expansion of a soybean processing plant in Morristown. The plant already processes 5.3 million bushels of soybeans annually, and the new facility will add another 4.5 million bushels per year of capacity. The new plant will manufacture soy protein concentrate and textured soy protein concentrate, which are used in the production of plant-based foods, processed meat, pet food and feed products. The project is expected to wrap up toward the end of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

Indiana has about $2.4 billion of renewable energy projects under construction, and with one exception, all of them will employ photovoltaic solar technology. One of the largest of these projects comes from U.S. renewable energy behemoth Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois), which has hired Cupertino Electric Incorporated (San Jose, California) as the EPC firm on the project in Fairbanks, near the Illinois border. When completed early next year, the plant will use nearly 580,000 solar modules on a single-axis horizontal tracking system to provide 250 megawatts of emissions-free power generation. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
