Indiana Utility Owners Spend Over $1 Billion to Reduce Power Plant Emissions

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). More than 30 years after the Clean Air Act became law in 1974, many power plants are still operating without modern pollution controls. Indiana plant owners have agreed to make substantial investments over the next several years to comply with more stringent environmental regulations imposed by federal and state governments.

For example, Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) has identified three locations where it will invest approximately $500 million in advanced equipment to continue improving the environmental performance. Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was contracted for the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) replacement, which was recently completed on the 531-megawatt Unit #2 at the Cayuga Power Station (Cayuga, Indiana). In addition, Babcock & Wilcox, Incorporated (Cincinnati, Ohio) will be providing engineering and construction services on a $200 million wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber project to be kicked off this fall at the plant on Units #1 and #2, with completion in the spring of 2008.

Babcock & Wilcox also started construction last October on a $300 million scrubber project at the five-unit, 3,340-megawatt Gibson Generating Station (Owensville, Indiana) that is scheduled for completion at the end of 2008. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) reduction scrubbers will be installed on Units #1, #2 and #3. Units #4 and #5 are already equipped with scrubbers.

Duke Energy had also selected The Industrial Company (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) to install baghouses on four 150-megawatt coal-fired boilers at the R Gallagher Power Station (New Albany, Indiana) to begin next spring and completion following in 2012.

Indiana Power & Light Company (Indianapolis, Indiana) is the preparing project scope for a scrubber upgrade at the Petersburg Power Station (Petersburg, Indiana) by 2009, and plans to invest $80 million to install a wet scrubber on a 471-megawatt unit at The Harding Street Power Station (Indianapolis, Indiana) in 2007.
