Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ramping up power equipment manufacturing to meet India's exponential requirements for new generation capacity, state-owned firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is investing more than $800 million in targeting an annual output of turbines with a capacity of 15,000 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2009. In the past year, the company has increased capacity from 6,000 MW to 10,000 MW.
About $45 million has been invested in the state-of-the-art blade shop, as well as$55 million for the upgrade of production capacity of advanced design blades to 22,500 per annum to match the 15,000-MW output. This will enable BHEL to become fully capable of manufacturing advanced design blades for thermal sets of up to 1,000 MW.
The company is positioning to meet key aspects of power plant equipment manufacture in setting up a new fabrication plant and a central stamping unit at Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh. The supply of fabricated components and assemblies will total about 25,000 tons per annum and will include 16,000 tons of structures for boilers for dispatching to power plants in the eastern and northern regions of the country. The stamping unit will help to meet the growth in market demand for generators and electrical motors. The demand for stampings is estimated to rise to 13 million per annum by 2011. The new unit will benefit from economies of scale and will be able to meet total national demand for stamping products.
BHEL has also been upgrading with the introduction of new technologies and is now able to produce thermal power equipment with supercritical parameters for 800-MW sets and above. It is also ramping up manpower and technical staff to meet contracted deadlines.
These developments of its manufacturing expertise and capacity will enable BHEL to manufacture power-generation equipment with the capacity of 56,000 MW during the 11th five-year plan (2007-12). The company has contracts for 31,923 MW of equipment and is ready to take on more. It is able to supply 9,775 MW of equipment from stock not used in the previous five-year pan. To meet the requirement for the 11th plan, it must manufacture equipment of 26,148 MW in capacity, which represents less than half its capacity, leaving room to pursue new business.
