India’s National Hydro Power Corporation Plans New $240 Million Hydroelectric Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). India’s state owned National Hydro Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) (Faridabad, India) is conducting detailed engineering for a $240 million, 160-megawatt hydroelectric power station to be located in India’s West Bengal state. The project will be situated on the Teesta River about twenty-five kilometers southeast of the city of Siliguri. The Indian Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) granted approval for the construction of the power station to the NHPC in the third quarter of 2005. The NHPC followed by awarding the construction contract for the project to a consortium consisting of the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) (Mumbai, India) and the Hincon Techno Consult (Mumbai, India).

The Teesta Low Dam IV power project will consist of a 147-foot high concrete gravity dam with an underground powerhouse, housing up to four 40 megawatt Kaplan hydroelectric turbine generators. It will also consist of two 29-foot diameter, 25-foot high, pressure shafts bifurcating into two penstocks. The project will also consist of an 889.3-acre reservoir that will submerge some forestland and also sections of National Highway 31A leading to India’s Sikkim state. The forest submerged will be compensated by the forestation program described in the compensatory affrication segment of the Environmental Impact Management Plant (EIMP). The project will only displace ten families that will be adequately compensated based on their environmental impact assessment (EIA) study. The submerged sections to National Highway 31A will be diverted through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Teesta Low Dam IV project has been scheduled for a third quarter 2006 construction kick-off, with completion of construction and commercial operations set for first quarter 2010. When completed the project will help reduce peak energy shortages in the West Bengal State.
