Industrial Info Tracks $826 Million in Praxair Projects as Merger with Linde Looms

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Praxair Incorporated (NYSE:PX) (Danbury, Connecticut) is underway with a series of capital and maintenance projects as its merger with Linde AG (Munich, Germany) looms on the horizon, which will create the world's largest supplier of industrial gases. A final decision on the Linde-Praxair merger remains in the hands of European regulators. Last month, the companies agreed to divest more than $9 billion in assets--Linde $3.3 billion worth in North America and South America, and Praxair $5.9 billion worth in Europe--in order to assist the regulatory process.

Praxair continues with both grassroot projects and expansions of existing plants in North America. Among the largest Praxair projects being tracked by Industrial Info is construction of a grassroot plant in Geismar, Louisiana, to produce hydrogen and high-purity carbon monoxide from a stream of crude synthesis gas. The facility will provide the gases to an adjacent plant owned by chemicals producer BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany). Construction is expected to start in the first half of next year and be completed in 2020. In Texas, Praxair has begun work on a brownfield site to construct a hydrogen and carbon monoxide plant in Pasadena. The plant will produce approximately 80 million cubic feet per day of the gases. New plant construction is not the only activity for Praxair. The company is evaluating plant expansions in Texas and Florida. In Florida, Praxair could construct a new air separation unit to produce an estimated 300 tons per day of oxygen, nitrogen and argon. Construction could begin next year, for completion in early 2020.
