In Pasadena, Texas, Praxair was performing preliminary engineering for an 80 million-standard-cubic-foot-per-day HYCO (hydrogen-carbon monoxide) brownfield plant located on the grounds of a Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) (Irving, Texas) site. Praxair and Linde AG (Munich, Germany) announced a proposed a merger in late 2016 that has been estimated at $85 billion, but the deal is still undergoing regulatory scrutiny. EU antitrust regulators have set a deadline of August 9 this year to decide whether to greenlight the merger, according to Reuters. Last week, Air Products and Huntsman (NYSE:HUN) (The Woodlands, Texas) conducted a groundbreaking ceremony in Geismar, Louisiana, for a HYCO plant to produce 50 million standard cubic feet per day of hydrogen and 370 tons per day of carbon monoxide. Located on land leased by Huntsman, the plant will supply gases to Huntsman's neighboring operations. Completion is targeted for early 2020. Beyond supplying Huntsman's Geismar facility, Air Products' new plant will also be connected to its Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline and network system (GCP), which stretches from the Houston Ship Channel in Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana, the company said. Air Products has forecasted $1 billion to $1.2 billion in capital expenditures for the current fiscal year. Globally, the company said it has a $1.5 billion project backlog and has room to grow. Airgas USA, LLC, an Air Liquide S.A. (Paris, France) company, announced plans in November to build an air separation plant and distribution unit in Mebane, North Carolina. The facility is expected to be on-stream in 2019 and will produce 350 tons per day of oxygen, as well as nitrogen and argon for use in applications such as metal fabrication, blanketing and purging, combustion, chilling and freezing. In addition, the unit will produce medical-grade oxygen to supply to hospitals, nursing homes and research laboratories as well as food and pharmaceutical-grade nitrogen.
