In Latin America, there are nearly 19 gigawatts (GW) of installed base power from binational hydropower plants: the 14-GW Itaipu hydropower plant between Brazil and Paraguay; the 3.2-GW Yacyreta hydropower plant between Argentina and Paraguay; and a 1.89-GW plant between Argentina and Uruguay.
There are plans to add 3 GW to this number via three projects. The smallest of these is the Aña Cua project, consisting of the addition of three Kaplan turbines to the Yacyreta Spillway. This project is currently in the tender phase, and construction could start by mid-2020. The other two projects are large grassroot facilities: the 1.6-GW Itati-Ita Cora project at the Parana River on the border between Argentina and Paraguay, and the 3-GW Madeira River project on the border between Brazil and Bolivia. Both projects are in early phases of development, and their construction kickoff won't take place before 2022-23.
