Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Virginia boasts a broad range of industries that have projects under construction. Leading the pack in terms of project value is the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, which encompasses a range of sectors, including data centers and warehousing and distribution. Next in line, thanks to a large vaccine-manufacturing project, is the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, which actually boasts the state's largest project by value.

Merck & Co.'s (NYSE:MRK) (Rahway, New Jersey) Gardasil vaccine, which helps protect against human papillomavirus (HPV), is undoubtably a blockbuster. The vaccine initially was approved for use in the U.S. in 2006 for females aged 9 to 26. However, the window was widened, and it is now recommended for both males and females before adolescence. By 2011, the vaccine had been approved in 120 other countries. Use of the vaccine has continued rising, and in 2019, Merck announced plans to expand its Gardasil plants in Virginia and neighboring North Carolina. The Virginia project entails building a 120,000-square-foot building addition and a new purification train to expand manufacture of the vaccine. The three-year project kicked off in 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Virginia is a mecca for data center development, with more than $2.6 billion of the facilities under construction. One particular hotspot is the city of Ashburn, where several of these projects are located. Ashburn's data center activity may diminish in the future as, earlier this summer, Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) raised a red flag, stating that it would it have difficulty meeting power demand in the area because of the influx of the facilities. According to Data Center Dynamics, Loudon County, where Ashburn is located, is home to 26 million square feet of data center space, with 5 million more in development and many more projects planned.
CloudHQ LLC (Washington, D.C.) is underway with Phase I of a proposed 1 million-square-foot data center campus. The first phase of the project includes construction of a 668,100-square-foot building with 59 megawatts (MW) of power. General contractor Holder Construction Company (Atlanta, Georgia) kicked off construction on the project late last year, and the project is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. Other hotspots for data centers include Manassas, about 25 miles south of Ashburn and 30 miles west of Washington, D.C. Among the projects is e-commerce and cloud computing giant Amazon.com Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) Project Brickyard, a Phase II expansion of an existing campus. The project entails a nearly 212,000-square-foot data center building with supporting systems and equipment to provide expanded cloud data services in the region. The project is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
But that's not all for Amazon. Industrial Info is tracking four warehouse and distribution projects under construction in Virginia by the company. Among the largest of these is a grassroot fulfillment center in Richmond. The five-story, 2.6 million-square-foot facility will use state-of-the-art robotics to help the company sort, package and ship smaller goods such as books, electronics and household items. Construction is expected to wrap up in the first half of next year. Subscribers can click here for the report.
E-commerce companies such as Amazon have driven up the demand for packaging used in shipping, and a project in Ashland, Virginia, is indicative of this. Cascades Incorporated (Kingsey Falls, Quebec) is repurposing a shuttered newsprint paper mill and its equipment to produce 465,000 tons per year of linerboard, the thin cardboard used for the faces of corrugated containers. The project kicked off last year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pulp, Paper & Wood Project Database can click here for the full report.
The Food & Beverage Industry also features prominently in Virginia's project activity. Project examples include Pure Salmon's (Abu Dhabi) grassroot salmon aquaculture facility in Cedar Bluff. Construction on the 165-acre site began late last year and is expected to be completed in late 2023. According to local news media, it will take two years to bring the fish to market after the eggs are brought in 2023.
