Inner Mongolia's Coal Output Reaches 171.52 Million Metric Tons from January to May 2008

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The coal output of northern China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region reached 171.52 million metric tons from January to May 2008, an increase of 31.85 million metric tons or 21.8% compared to the same period last year. The output in May reached 39.03 million metric tons, the second highest coal production of all of China's provinces and regions, according to the Inner Mongolia Development and Reform Commission.

From January to May, the output of state-owned coal enterprises in Inner Mongolia reached 89.94 million metric tons, an increase of 19.26 million metric tons or 27.24% year over year, while the output of local coal enterprises reached 81.56 million metric tons, an increase of 10.32 million metric tons or 14.48% year over year.

As the second largest coal producer in China, coal production output in Inner Mongolia has grown steadily in recent years. In 2007, the coal output of Inner Mongolia reached 350 million metric tons, 190 million metric tons of which was shipped out of the region. Inner Mongolia supplied 693 million metric tons of coal to other regions around the country from 2002 to 2007. As of June 2007, the proven reserve of coal in Inner Mongolia jumped to 658.34 billion metric tons, giving the region the largest amount of coal in China.

Since the beginning of 2008, Inner Mongolia has increased its supply of coal and electricity. From January to May 2008, the power generation output of Inner Mongolia reached 84.73 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 22.88% year over year, making it the largest power producer of all of China's regions and provinces. In responding to China's current shortage of coal and power, Inner Mongolia has decided to increase its coal output by another 20 million metric tons in the second half of this year.

Despite the increase in output, mining-related accidents and deaths have been reduced. From January to May, five accidents and six deaths relating to coalmining occurred, a drop of 64.3% and 80% year over year respectively.
