Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following the recent commissioning of Unit 2 of Ertan Hydropower Development Company Limited's (Chengdu, Sichuan) Guandi Hydropower Station, the installed capacity of electric power in Sichuan surpassed 50 gigawatts (GW) for the first time, according a news conference regarding power construction in the Sichuan province and an awarding ceremony for installed capacity surpassing 50 GW, which were held by the government of Sichuan in Chengdu on July 2, 2012.
This is another important milestone in the development history of the power industry in Sichuan. In 2010, the installed capacity of Sichuan surpassed 40 GW the first time. In less than two years, the installed capacity of Sichuan created a new record high of more than 50 GW. It's expected that the installed capacity of Sichuan will reach 88 GW by the end of 2015, including about 70 GW of hydropower and 18 GW of thermal power. The Sichuan grid is turning from an end point in the national grid into a hub connecting the Northwest, Central China, North China and East China grids.
The power industry of Sichuan has experienced a rapid growth in recent years. As of the end of May 2012, the total installed capacity of the province reached 50.08 GW, including 35.47 GW of hydropower, 14.59 GW of thermal power and 160 megawatts (MW) of wind power. The Sichuan grid has established a safe and stable grid frame, with ultra-high voltage, DC and AC interconnected. The proportion of hydropower with regulating capability has been promoted from about 30% in 2010 to 40% at present. The proportion of thermal power with single-unit capacity of more than 600 MW also has been promoted from about 30% in 2010 to about 40% at present.
From January 2011 to June 2012, the province had shut down a total of 822.7 MW of small-sized thermal power units. While maintaining a rapid growth in installed capacity, power consumption in Sichuan also achieved stable growth. In the first five months of 2012, the power output of Sichuan reached 70.7 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 4.6% year over year, and the social power consumption reached 72.8 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 4.74% year over year.
