Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The market for permanent magnets has seen growth in the last few years owing to rising demand in key sectors like electronics, automobiles and renewable energy. Produced by alloying magnetic metals like iron, nickel, cobalt, rare earth metals, etc., permanent magnets are materials that retain their magnetism without external influence. They are energy-efficient, durable, portable, available in small sizes and have a higher power-to-weight ratio. Some of the most popular ones include neodymium iron boron, alnico, ferrite and samarium cobalt magnets.
The booming electronics market comprising laptops, smartphones, televisions, speakers, cameras and advancements in technology have meant an increase in demand for permanent magnets. Also used in the electric motors, power steering, air conditioning system and other components, permanent magnets play a major role in the manufacturing of electric vehicles.
Use of permanent magnets in renewable energy generation devices, such as wind turbines and solar panels, also elevates their demand. For instance, the use of permanent magnet generators in solar tracking systems as compared to conventional generators offers 30% improved energy output, optimizing the overall performance of the photovoltaic system.
Industrial Info is tracking 35 active capital projects worth more than US$4 billion geared at manufacturing of permanent magnets. About 36% of these projects are grassroot developments, and 59% are for plant expansions.
Asia, with a market share of 64% is driving the highest spending at more than US$2 billion. The remaining spending is being tracked in North America (23%) and Europe (13%). By country, maximum investment is concentrated in China, the U.S. and Spain.
Overall, projects worth about 60% of the investment are in their planning stage, 28% being engineered and 12% under construction. A majority of the projects are anticipated to reach completion between the years 2024 and 2026, with the remaining scheduled to be completed by 2030.

The global permanent magnet market faces challenges like fluctuations in the availability of raw materials, such as rare earth, which often hinders standardization in quality as well as prices. Rising energy costs and supply chain disruptions continue to impact the production and distribution, leading to increased costs and potential delays.
Researchers and industries are actively exploring alternatives like rare-earth element-free magnets, magnetic composites, and advanced electromagnetic technologies. However, permanent magnets remain difficult to replace due to their unique properties, wide application range, and market dependency.
