Iraq Unveils Ambitious Plan for 15,000 MW Steam Power Projects
Iraq's Ministry of Electricity plans to develop new steam power plants with a combined generating capacity of 15,000 megawatts
Released Friday, May 02, 2025
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Iraq's Ministry of Electricity plans to develop new steam power plants with a combined generating capacity of 15,000 megawatts (MW). The effort already has attracted strong interest from more than 100 local and international companies.
According to the ministry, three investment models--engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), EPC plus financing (EPC+F), and independent power producer (IPP)--have been proposed to potential investors. The new plants will be distributed strategically across Iraq's Southern, Central Euphrates, Central and Northern regions.
This initiative forms a key part of Iraq's broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on imports.
Iraq also recently signed non-binding agreements with GE Vernova and UGT Renewables to add 27 gigawatts (GW) to its power-generation capacity. These agreements include the development of combined-cycle gas power plants totaling 24 GW and an integrated, 3-GW solar-energy project.
