Iroquois Bio-Energy Begins Grinding Corn and Starts Producing Ethanol this Week in Indiana

Farmer cooperative-owned Iroquois Bio-Energy Company, LLC (Rensselaer, Indiana) has begun grinding corn and expects the first batch of ethanol to begin coming out of the plant later this week. As of January 18th, production has begun on this $60 million project and also marks the second major stand alone operational fuel ethanol plant in the state, along with New Energy Corporation’s 85 million-gallon per year plant in South Bend.

A grand opening celebration is planned for late February or early March 2007. Construction began on the 40 million-gallon per year plant in September of 2005 and took sixteen months to complete. The licensed process technology was provided by ICM, Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) and the plant was built by Fagen (Granite Falls, Minnesota). Some 14 million bushels of corn will be processed at the plant on an annual basis.

Fuel ethanol plant construction is rocking in Indiana with eight plants currently under construction representing over 560 million gallons of additional capacity. Plants currently under construction in Indiana include ASAAlliances Biofuels in Linden (100MM gal/yr); Cardinal Ethanol in Winchester (100MM gal/yr); Central Indiana Ethanol in Marion (40MM gal/yr); Hartford Bio-Energy in Hartford City (60MM gal/yr); Indiana Bio Energy in Bluffton (100MM gal/yr); The Andersons in Clymers (110MM gal/yr); Premier Ethanol in Portland (60MM gal/yr) and Putnam Ethanol in Cloverdale (100MM gal/yr).

All plants currently under construction are expected to be online by late 2008 and another seventeen bio-refineries, including ethanol and biodiesel facilities, are in the development phase in Indiana.
