Italcementi Continues North America Cement Capacity Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Essroc Cement (Nazareth, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Italcementi Group (Bergamo, Italy), is continuing a string of North American cement plant expansion and modernizations. For details, see February 2002 news article - Essroc Italcementi Shifts Gears on Expansion Plans.

Essroc has begun demolition work in preparation for a $300 million modernization at the company’s cement plant in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Essroc recently awarded FL Smidth, Incorporated (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) the engineering and equipment contract for a new 5,000-ton per day dry process kiln line, which includes a rotary kiln, preheater, and clinker cooler. Full construction is expected to begin in September 2006. Once operational in 2008, the new plant will produce 1.8 million tons per year.

This new capacity will replace about 800,000 tons per year of capacity from the existing three wet process kilns at the Martinsburg plant and about 510,000 tons per year of capacity from the company’s cement plant in Frederick, Maryland, representing an increase in capacity of about 38%. The Frederick plant operates two wet process kiln lines, which are scheduled to be shut down along with two of the wet process lines at Martinsburg. A third wet process kiln line at Martinsburg will be kept open to produce a limited amount of specialty colored clinker.

Essroc acquired the Martinsburg cement plant as part of its May 2002 acquisition of Capitol Materials Corporation. Industrial Info has been tracking this project since Capitol Materials first began scoping studies in 2000.

In 2005, Essroc completed a $50 million modernization at its Nazareth cement plant.

Italcementi Group is the fifth largest cement producer in the world. In addition to the Martinsburg expansion/modernization, the company is planning expansions in Spain, Turkey, India, and Morocco.
