Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- The Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry is on track to complete construction on 383 North American capital and maintenance projects in the first quarter of 2018. A recent survey of reported projects in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Online Platform reveals that the projects have a total investment value (TIV) of $4.6 billion.
Sources for the first-quarter activity include private industry, commercial developers and universities. The projects reported include grassroot facilities, major building additions to existing sites and in-plant capital. The projects are varied in size and focus, with an average TIV of about $12 million.
Geographically, the projects span North America, from Alaska down to Puerto Rico and from Newfoundland, Canada, to Washington state. From a regional standpoint, the Mid-Atlantic garnered most of the activity, with $689 million in completions, closely followed by the Great Lakes with $679 million and New England with $570 million.
Nutrivo LLC (Aurora, Illinois) recently finished a $6.5 million expansion of its nutritional supplement powders contract manufacturing (CMO) plant in Aurora. The project added and equipped 100,000 square feet, bringing the total size of the facility to 230,000 square feet. Working with Keeley Construction Incorporated (Villa Park, Illinois), construction got underway last July, allowing for expanded capacity of blending, bottling and labelling services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
B Braun Medical (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) completed a $100 million expansion and renovation of its renal sterile solutions site in Daytona Beach, Florida. With Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Dallas, Texas) and Gilbane Building Company (Jacksonville, Florida) on board, the company renovated and equipped approximately 100,000 square feet of the existing 160,000-square-foot building and constructed a 54,000-square-foot addition. Braun's purchase agreement of the plant in 2016 allowed for Baxter/Gambro to keep operating the facility until it was able to fulfill contractual obligations. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Redwood City, California, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) (New York, New York) is completing the fourth phase to renovate and expand its biological drug discovery center. The project, with XL Construction (Milpitas, California) serving as general contractor, included seismic retrofit of the 61,500-square-foot leased building, as well as interior demo and lab fit-out. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
As is the case when dealing with the construction of any type of structure, further compounded by the nature of these projects, completion dates may go beyond what is reported. If the project involves manufacturing, the completion date may be over a year before the occupancy/operational date, due to commissioning and validation requirements.
