Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Plans for an elaborate 96,000 square foot mouse-breeding facility on the grounds of the University of California Davis (Sacramento, California) campus have been shelved for now. UC Davis, in partnership with The Jackson Laboratory (The Laboratory) (Bar Harbor, Maine) and their mouse breeding division JAX Research Systems (JRS) were to split the cost of the $25 million dollar project (PEC 06003652).
Mice are almost perfect for use in medical research because they have a physiology that's similar to humans, they develop similar kinds of diseases, and they reproduce rapidly. Because mouse and human genes are so similar, finding these genes in mice makes it easier to find them in humans.
The Laboratory announced a structural reorganization in September of this year, which included the reintegration of JRS (JRS) into the fundamental management and operations of the Laboratory. Prior to this action, JRS had operated with its own management infrastructure. While JRS will vacate their lab space at UC Davis, The Laboratory has no plans for JRS to leave their site in Riverside Park at West Sacramento.
