Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The mineral-rich state of Jharkhand in the northeast of India has been struggling to develop its full industrial and social potential, as it has faced chronic power supply shortages. The state's power and energy minister, Rajendra Prasad, recently announced that the Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) is planning to construct four thermal power stations, each with a generation capacity of 1,320 megawatts.

The state's power and energy minister, Rajendra Prasad, recently announced that the Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) is planning to construct four thermal power stations, each with a generation capacity of 1,320 megawatts. The units will be set up at Patratu, Tenughat, Garhwa and Dumka. Work is scheduled to begin soon and should be completed in late 2016.

The minister said that despite the availability of ample coal resources and water in the dams, no initiatives to meet the power problem had been taken since 2000. Funds available from the federal government were not accessed.

The critical power supply situation had been worsened by the run-down condition of the two existing JSEB power stations at Patratu and Tenughat. Measures are being implemented to renovate both power stations.

The state government also has requested that the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and the National Thermal Power Corporation (BSE:53255) (NTPC) (New Delhi) provide power to the JSEB to support a sustained boost in industrial development.

The central government in Delhi is helping to provide 5,000 transformers of various capacities to replace burnt-out equipment in Jharkhand. The replacement process has been given priority fast-track status.
