Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Jiangxi Provincial Investment Corporation (Nanchang) announced on June 30 that it plans to build two 1,000-megawatt (MW) units in the Phase III expansion of the Fengcheng Power Plant. A preliminary feasibility study report was approved on June 28.
Jiangxi's economic development has greatly contributed to a fast increase in power consumption. Statistics show that Jiangxi's grid will have an installed capacity of about 9,500 MW this summer; however, the maximum load is expected to surpass 10,000 MW, and the power shortage is expected to hit 1,000 MW.
The Fengcheng plant, located on the Gan River, was jointly invested by Jiangxi Provincial (55%) and China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) (45%) as a key project for the nation's Ninth Five-Year Plan. After two phases of construction, the plant now has a total installed capacity of 2,400 MW -- four 300-MW coal-fired units built in Phase I and two 600-MW coal-fired units built in Phase II -- and it has become one of the most reliable backbone power sources for the Jiangxi grid. The plant is poised to become a major power source for the provincial capital of Nanchang because of its proximity to the city.
According to the feasibility study, the Phase III expansion will provide the facility with two 1,000-MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired units at a cost of about $1.15 billion. The project will occupy about 165.25 hectares. It is expected to complete construction in about 38 months and boost the plant's capacity to 4,600 MW.
