Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's Jindal Stainless Limited (BSE:532508) (New Delhi, India) has been selected by International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) to supply stainless steel for the cryostat project.

About 3,650 tons of stainless will be used in this project with a value of about $17 million. Jindal Stainless is one of only two plate mills approved for the project, the other being ArcelorMittal's (NYSE:MT) (Luxembourg) Industeel in France. The biggest consideration in the design and construction is safety. Strict rules defined by various application codes--ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials) and ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers)--ensure that materials used in critical components are fully qualified for the intended applications.

Based on Jindal's credentials and the company's standard quality assurance plan (QAP), an audit was conducted for systems, processing and heat treatment at the Jaipur stainless steel plant, which was found to be able to meet the stringent technical requirements for the project.

"We have already begun [to provide] supplies, and we are extremely proud to supply the desired quality of stainless steel, and to be associated with this revolutionary and path-breaking advancement in the power sector," said Pankat Mittal Sr., the vice president for the marketing and supply chain

Seven countries have been collaborating on ITER, which is sited at Cadarache, France: the European Union, India, Russia, China, South Korea, Japan and the U.S.
