Joule Biotechnologies Picks Texas Site for Solar Biofuel Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Joule Biotechnologies Incorporated (Cambridge, Massachusetts) has selected a site in the small town of Leander, Texas, just north of Austin, as the location for the company's pilot-scale solar biofuels plant. The company will use the pilot plant to advance development and testing of their transformative technology that converts sunlight and waste CO2 into clean, renewable fuels and chemicals at unprecedented volumes and costs.

The Leander site was chosen because of its high solar insulation, which is a measure of solar radiation energy on a given surface area at a given time, and its location in the central part of the United States.

Multiple modular solar converter panels will be installed at the site. Using a proprietary separation system, the site will be able to produce 20,000 to 25,000 gallons per acre of biofuels, mainly in the form of fuel ethanol, but also will be able to produce biodiesel.

The direct fuel conversion process requires no fresh water, causes a minimal impact to non-agricultural land and produces fuel at a low cost.

The company will continue pilot plant development; after a successful run of pilot-scale production is achieved, construction of the multi-million dollar facility in is expected to begin in late 2011 and be in full production by the end of 2012.
