Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). In a time of record-high gasoline prices, more emphasis is being placed on renewable energy sources. With growing concern about global climate changes, favorable conditions are increasing for landfill gas-to-energy (LFG) projects.

A landfill is a site for the disposal of waste materials. The waste naturally contains biodegrading organisms and decomposes, which generates landfill gas. Landfill gas is primarily comprised of a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all landfills to install gas collection systems of some type or other, depending on the type of waste to be managed, to reduce the release of methane, which greatly contributes to air pollution.

Burlington County Freeholders (Mount Holly, New Jersey) has chosen DCO Energy (Atlantic City, New Jersey) to design and construct the 7.5-megawatt (MW) Columbus Landfill Gas-to-Energy plant (Columbus, New Jersey). The facility will include a methane recovery system with five 1.5 MW reciprocating engines and supporting equipment.

With Concord Engineering Group (Voorhees, New Jersey) being the consultant, construction is scheduled for later this year and should be complete by the summer of 2007.

Bethlehem Renewable Energy (Arlington, Virginia) is also planning to construct a 5-megawatt Bethlehem LFG plant (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) this December to be operational by April of 2007.

In terms of numbers of existing landfill gas-to-energy plants, California is the leader. Generating 52 megawatts of electricity, Los Angeles County Sanitation District’s (Whittier, California) Puente Hills LFG-to-energy Plant is the largest in the country.
