Lightning Causes Severe Damage to Wisconsin Power Plant

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Weston Power Station’s (Rothschild, Wisconsin) Unit 3 was tripped offline after it was struck by lightning October 6, 2007. Plant engineers have said the lightning caused significant damage, knocking out both the AC & DC power, as well as the DCS system. The damage is estimated to be more than $2 million. Officials have said the lightning was so severe that the unit will be out of commission until at least November until further notice.

Weston Power Station is owned and operated by Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Group Incorporated (NYSE:TEG ). The 524-megawatt (MW) Weston station consists of two Allis Chalmers steam turbines with two dry bottom boilers, one General Electric (NYSE:GE ) steam turbine with a dry bottom boiler and two Siemens Westinghouse combustion turbines. In 2008, Unit 4 will become operational, giving the power station 1,039 MW.
