LiquidMaize Breaks Ground on Colorado Fuel Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned ethanol start-up LiquidMaize LLC (Denver, Colorado) has broken ground on the company's first fuel ethanol plant in Lamar, Colorado. The plant, being touted as a "short haul" ethanol plant because of the fact that the plant will operate under the strategy of eliminating transportation costs for its wet distillers grains and reducing transportation and storage costs for its ethanol.

The plant is located just north of the Four States Feeders feedlot in Lamar on Colorado 196 in Prowers County. The plant will be designed and built by ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) and will produce 11 million gallons of fuel ethanol annually from some 4.2 million bushels per year of locally grown corn. The wet distillers grains will be transported directly to the feedlot for cattle consumption.

Construction is expected to be in full swing by the middle of April, and because of the plant's small size, it is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2008. Costs to build the plant are in the $24 million range.

LiquidMaize's long-term strategy is to have up to 25 "short haul" plants operating across the U.S. by 2012 with an overall production capacity of 250 million gallons per year. The company is looking into building another Colorado plant in Ordway and in Gonzales, Texas.
