Louisiana Pacific Gearing Up for Groundbreaking of $106 Million Project at OSB Mill in Maine

Within a few weeks, Louisiana Pacific (NYSE:LP) (Nashville, Tennessee) expects to break ground on a $106 million capital project at an oriented strand board (OSB) plant in New Limerick, Maine. The project is designed to convert production of OSB to oriented strand lumber (OSL). The start of construction is contingent upon receipt of final permits, which are expected by September. First board production is slated for November 2007.

Industrial Info first reported on Louisiana Pacific’s plans for the conversion project in a project report released in February 2006. The company has contracted NGM International (Fredericton, New Brunswick) as the engineering representative and will act as its own construction manager for the project. The heart of the production line, a multi-opening press, has been ordered from Dieffenbacher (Germany) and will be located in a pre-engineered building. Bids for major equipment packages are currently on the street and LP plans to release mechanical and electrical packages in November.

Operations at the New Limerick plant began in 1982 and currently employs 124 workers. The site has an annual production of 280 million square feet. The plant is one of 28 company-owned plants in the U.S. and Canada that manufactures home building products.
