McCarthy Building New $132 Million Laboratory Facility for the CDC in Atlanta

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Construction is well underway on a new laboratory for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Atlanta, Georgia), an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. McCarthy Building Companies Incorporated (Saint Louis, Missouri) is serving as the construction manager for the $132 million project, known as Building 18-Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory at CDC's Roybal campus in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 11-story, 370,000 square foot structure will accommodate Level 2, 3, and 4 Biosafety Labs, with Level 4 labs requiring the highest containment precautions. The new facility will double the CDC's existing Level 4 capacity and will be one of only five such high-containment labs in North America. The lab will employ 450 scientific personnel working on multiple research activities for CDC's infectious disease programs, including AIDS, STD, and TB laboratory research, bacterial and viral diseases programs, and the government's bioterrorism program. CUH2A Incorporated (Atlanta, Georgia) served as the architect for the project, which started construction in October 2001 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2004.
