Melamine Plants Popping Up Across the Globe

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Since the beginning of 2005, Industrial Info has tracked a total of four melamine plants that were actively being planned with a combined total investment value (TIV) of $360 million. The smallest production unit being tracked is a 15,000 ton a year and the largest will produce 80,000 tons a year once complete. Two projects are being planned in Europe, one in Asia and one in the Middle East.

JSC Acron (Novgorod, Russia) is awaiting funding for a 20,000 ton a year unit that it will build at its existing site in Novgorod. Acron mainly produces fertilizers at the site and melamine is an ingredient that is added to fertilizer. Urea and formaldehyde, also produced at fertilizer plants, can be combined with melamine to be used as an adhesive and resin. Construction on the $60 million plant is expected to commence in the second half of 2007, with completion following in 2009.

The second project in Europe is being built at Micro Chemie’s Rozenburg site in the Netherlands (See Related Article February 2005: Out with the Old, in with the New - Micro Chemie Sets Up Melamine Production at the Site of Old Kemira Plant in the Netherlands). Micro Chemie not only selected Lurgi AG (Frankfurt Am Main, Germany) as the technology provider, but awarded Lurgi the engineering and construction contract for the $75 million, 50,000 ton a year production unit. Construction recently began this past spring and completion is scheduled for the second half of 2007.

In Malaysia, Namhae Chemical Corporation (Yosu, South Korea) has recently completed building its grassroot melamine plant in the city of Bintulu. The unit has a production capacity of 15,000 tons a year and cost approximately $40 million for the design and construction. The output will be sold to manufacturers of paints, adhesives and laminates.

The largest of the melamine projects, as well as the most current, is the $185 million grassroot melamine plant currently being planned in Ruwais, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The plant will have a production capacity of 80,000 tons a year. The project is owned by a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Abu Dhabi, UAE) and Agrolinz Melamin GmbH (Linz, Austria). Funding for the project is expected this month so plans can continue to proceed. The joint venture anticipates a construction start date during the first quarter of 2007, with completion following in the fourth quarter of 2008.
