Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mexico's state-owned electric utility, Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City), has begun construction of a $750 million, combined-cycle, natural gas-fueled electric power station in the city of Empalme, Sonora. An engineering and construction consortium including Duro Felguera SA (Mexico City) and Elecnor de Mexico SA (DF, Mexico) is working on the project.
Known as Empalme II, the power station will consist of two Siemens AG (Berlin, German) SGT6-8000H heavy frame gas turbines and two SGen6-2000H generators sets.
The station will provide about 791 megawatts (MW) at peak capacity. Siemens will also be providing technical assistance during the construction and commissioning of the project. According to CFE, it will help supply part of the forecasted energy demands for residential and industry areas in northwest Mexico. CFE's network will provide the natural gas and diesel to operate the station.
The project is estimated to create about 1,200-1,500 site preparation and construction jobs within the local community during the peak construction period. About 35-45 permanent positions will be created for labor security, operation and maintenance of the power station.
CFE began construction in April, with full operations expected to commence in April 2018.
