Mexico's Electric Utility Awards Contract for Construction of Geothermal Power Station in Michoacan
Comision Federal de Electricidad SA de CV (CFE) (Michoacan, Mexico) plans to construct the second phase of the Azufres III Geothermal Power Station unit #3 addition, which will be located in Ciudad Hidalgo and Zinapecuaro in the state of Michoacán.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to TSK Electronica y Electricidad SA (Mexico City) and Fuji Electric (Kawasaki, Japan).
The power station will utilize a Fuji Electric 25-megawatt (MW) geothermal condensing steam turbine generator set, and it will use flash steam technology to increase the facility's capacity. The station will help meet growing demand for electrical power in Mexico's western region. Once completed, it will provide enough electricity for about 25,000 households.
The unit addition will create new green energy jobs during the construction phase, and once completed, it will require between 8 and12 employees for operation and maintenance of the station.
Mexico is the world's fourth largest producer of geothermal energy, with 1,058 MW; it ranks behind the U.S, which currently has 3,340 MW; Philippines, with 1,965 MW; and Indonesia, with 1,340 MW. Experts expect that this year might be the best year yet for geothermal development mainly due to Mexico's new energy reforms that open it to private sector participation to increase Mexico's renewable energy portfolio.
Construction of Phase II of the power station is expected to begin by August or September of this year, and is scheduled for full operations by early to mid-2018.
