Milk Production Expected to Dip in New Zealand
Milk production is expected to drop this year in New Zealand
Released Friday, May 27, 2022
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Milk production is expected to drop this year in New Zealand, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Expected liquid milk production has been revised down to 21.8 million metric tons, according to the agricultural service, which if realized would be the lowest annual level since 2017, and 1% below the revised 2021 number.
Also, the continued shrinkage of herd sizes is contributing to the situation, with the Foreign Agricultural Service estimating the total herd at 4,875,000 head, versus 4,904,000 last year.
Other reasons for the drop in milk production include continued dry conditions in milk-producing zones, elevated feed costs and an ongoing labor shortage.
