Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Kingsford Products Incorporated (Burnside, Kentucky), a division of The Clorox Company (NYSE:CLX) (Oakland, California), is planning to construct a new wood char plant in Glen, Mississippi. An estimated $20 million will be invested in the construction of the new plant that will process wood waste into wood char, which is the primary raw material used to produce charcoal briquettes. The char produced at this site will be shipped to Kingsford's existing Missouri and Kentucky plant operations to produce charcoal briquettes supporting consumer markets.
Roughly half of the 360,000 wet tons a year of wood waste feedstock needed to produce the wood char will come from over 30 local lumber and saw mills. The plant will use a process known as pyrolysis to produce the char by heating the biomass in the absence of air and breaking it down into biooil, non-condensable combustible gas or char. This process is very environmentally friendly, as there are virtually no carbon dioxide emissions released.
Construction for the new plant will begin in the fall of 2005 and will be complete in approximately one year. When the Glen plant is complete, it will add to the six United States Kingsford locations that currently exist, including two in Kentucky, two in West Virginia, one in Missouri, and one in Oregon. Pending future market demand, a $60 million investment could be spent for phase two and phase three expansions at the site. If the additional phases are approved, production equipment to produce charcoal briquettes, along with finishing equipment to package and ship the final product, could be installed.
