Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mississippi has some very large industrial projects underway, with two specific pieces of construction adding up to more than 50% of the nearly $7.9 billion worth of projects under construction in the state that are being tracked by Industrial Info.

The automotive sector both directly and indirectly affects Mississippi's two largest projects. The largest of these is the construction of a plant that will manufacture rechargeable batteries for the electric vehicle (EV) market. A conglomerate of Cummins, Daimler Trucks & Buses and PACCAR, known as Amplify Cell Technologies (Byhalia, Mississippi), last year broke ground on a plant in Marshall County, Mississippi, which Amplify says will make it the largest U.S. battery-manufacturing company dedicated to heavy- and medium-duty vehicles. When completed, the plant will produce 21 gigawatt-hours per year of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, which have a lower incidence of thermal runaway, a longer life cycle, faster charging rates and are more environmentally friendly than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Disadvantages include lower energy density and a bulkier size, but Amplify sees the benefits outweighing the drawbacks for LFP batteries' use in larger commercial vehicles. General contractor Yates Construction (Philadelphia, Mississippi) is expected to wrap up the project in 2027. Mississippi's other billion-dollar-plus project will cater to the automotive and other sectors. Steel company Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is moving into the aluminum sector with its Aluminum Dynamics spinoff. The company is wrapping up construction of an aluminum flat-rolled mill on which construction kicked off in 2023 in Columbus, Mississippi, where Steel Dynamics has operated a steel mill since 2014. When operating at full capacity, the facility will process an estimated 900,000 metric tons per year of aluminum slab, producing 650,000 tons of finished products annually to serve the beverage can, automotive and common alloy sectors. Aluminum is particularly important in the EV sector, where the metal's lighter weight can allow vehicles to travel further on a single charge. The mill is expected to begin operating later this year. EVs are the reason that Nissan Motor Corporation (Yokohama, Japan) is retooling its plant in Canton, where it has operated since 2003, enabling the facility to begin producing two all-new electric models for the Nissan and Infiniti brands when completed in the coming months. Nissan has announced the goal of producing 15 models of EVs by 2030 as part of its Nissan Ambition 2030 plan. Subscribers can click here for more details of the project.

In 2022, after 40 years of operation, a tornado made Hood Industries' (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) laminated plywood mill in Beaumont, Mississippi, inoperable. In 2023, Hood decided to keep its Beaumont location and construct a new facility there. "We are part of this community, and they are part of us," Hood President Jay Galloway said in a press release after the company had announced its decision to rebuild in Beaumont. The new mill will be built to the latest mechanical standards and will increase Hood's production from the mill from 380,000 board feet per year to 450,000 board feet per year. The new mill is expected to begin operating toward the end of this summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pulp, Paper & Wood Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

Mississippi also is home to a few Power Industry projects, mostly in the form of photovoltaic solar plants. Examples include NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Wildwood solar facility in Tallahatchie County. Work on the facility commenced late last year, and when completed this fall, the Wildwood plant will boast approximately 240,000 thin-film solar panels generating 100 megawatts of power.
