Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Monadelphous (ASX:MND) (Perth, Australia) has achieved great success in winning major maintenance contracts at large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) production plants in Australia. The question now is whether the West Australian engineering, construction and maintenance contractor can maintain its dominance in the face of competition for these sought-after, long-term service agreements.

Monadelphous is currently the major maintenance services provider for ConocoPhillips' (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) Darwin LNG plant; the North West Shelf joint venture for LNG production at Woodside Petroleum's (Perth) Karratha Gas Plant; and Woodside's Pluto LNG plant, plus the offshore Pluto platform.

The Darwin LNG contract is on the line, as ConocoPhillips assesses bids for the contract and considers renewal of Monadelphous' long-term service agreement, versus a new contract with a competitor. It is rumored that ConocoPhillips is likely to simplify contracting arrangements by choosing a maintenance contractor to take care of the onshore LNG plant and the offshore Bayu-Undan facilities.

ConocoPhillips and project joint-venture partner Origin Energy (ASX:ORG) (Sydney Australia) are assessing bids for the main maintenance services contract for the Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG) project (Curtis Island), which is set to begin LNG production in the latter part of 2015. APLNG's neighbors, Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) (Curtis Island) and Gladstone LNG (GLNG) (Curtis Island), which are both under construction, already have contracted with Monadelphous for maintenance.

The long-term service agreement between BG Group's (Reading, England) subsidiary QGC (Brisbane, Australia) and Monadelphous has been in place for a number of years in preparation for start-up this quarter, while the agreement with Santos (ASX:STO) (Adelaide, Australia) for the GLNG project is still under final negotiations.

Monadelphous lost out to UGL Limited (ASX:UGL) (Sydney) for provision of maintenance services on the Gorgon LNG project, which is operated by Chevron Australia Pty Limited (Perth), part of Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California). Chevron is yet to award the maintenance services contract on the Wheatstone LNG project.

INPEX Corporation's (TYO:1605) (Tokyo, Japan) Ichthys LNG project is under construction in Northern Territory. INPEX is some time away from awarding the main maintenance services contract for the plant; however, Monadelphous has been awarded a number of construction contracts on this particular project. Indeed, Monadelphous has celebrated wins on most of the afore-mentioned large-scale LNG projects during the construction phase.
