More Than 1,900 Megawatts of Renewable Energy Projects Planned in Iowa
Developers in Iowa plan to add 1,982 MW of renewable energy capacity.
Released Tuesday, May 08, 2012
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Generation development in Iowa, America's Heartland, is getting to the heart of being environmentally friendly with plans for future renewable energy projects. Iowa currently has 15,961 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity, of which 4,673 MW or 29.8% comes from renewable sources. Developers plan to add 1,982 MW of renewable energy, increasing the share of renewable power in the state to 42.4% at a cost of more than $3.9 billion. The facilities will use wind, hydro, and municipal solid waste converted into synthetic gas as fuels.
The majority of the projects (15) are windfarms, which will produce a total of 1,887 MW and vary in size from 30 MW to 301 MW, with anywhere from 10 to 188 wind turbine-generator sets that will range in generating capacity from 1.5 MW to 3 MW. Four of the projects at three locations will be owned by utilities. Three projects will be owned by MidAmerican Energy (Des Moines, Iowa), a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) (Omaha, Nebraska), and one will be owned by the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) (Ankeny, Iowa). The balance will be owned by non-utility generators.
The 40-MW synthetic gas project will be at the Marion Landfill No. 2, a municipal solid waste facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that is owned by the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency and will consist of two steam turbine-generators.
The 55-MW, two-unit Red Rock Lake & Dam Hydroelectric project in Knoxville, Iowa, will be jointly owned by Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) and Western Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (WMMPA), both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
