Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)-- Pharmaceutical major Merck, Sharp & Dohme (MSD) (Dublin, Ireland) has confirmed plans to build a second manufacturing facility at its existing site in Carlow, Ireland, which will create 170 additional jobs.
The new facility will focus on the production of vaccines and biologics, and there also will be an expansion of warehouse and laboratory services at the site. Industrial Info is tracking both projects, which have a combined investment value of more than $350 million. This is the latest in a string of new investments by the company in its Irish operations, notably in May 2017 when MSD announced plans to create 330 new jobs and invest 280 million euro ($319 million) in its manufacturing facilities in Carlow and Cork. Earlier this year, it confirmed that it would create 350 new jobs as part of a new biotech facility called MSD Biotech in Dublin.
The new Carlow plant will be operational in 2023, employing graduates with a wide variety of specialties, including engineers, biochemists, lab technicians and other technical staff.
"We are delighted to be able to announce this further expansion of MSD's footprint in Ireland, which comes on the back of a number of significant investments in our facilities across Ireland in 2017 and the announcement earlier this year that a new facility would be built in Dublin," said Ger Brennan, Managing Director of MSD Human Health in Ireland. "MSD's continued investment in Ireland is due to continued access to highly-skilled employees as well as collaborative partnerships with Government and third level institutions."
The news was welcomed by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar: "This is excellent news for Carlow and a real testament to the existing staff and local management team working for MSD in the town. The company has gone from strength to strength since first opening in Carlow in 2008, and it now employs more than 2,000 people across the country. The government, through the IDA, is committed to supporting and expanding the presence of multinational companies in the regions. Through our Future Jobs strategy, we are planning now for the jobs of the future, to ensure all regions of the country can continue to benefit as our economy strengthens and diversifies."
The existing Carlow manufacturing facility is MSD's first stand-alone vaccine and biologics facility outside the U.S. In Cork the Brinny facility is an integrated site for the development, testing and manufacturing of biologics, specialising in the fermentation, purification and sterile filling of biotech products. These include medicines for lung cancer, melanoma, hepatitis C and rheumatoid arthritis.
