Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--National Grid plc (NYSE:NGG) (London, England), which operates energy assets in the U.S. and the U.K., is upbeat about the prospects for its 2024 fiscal year. The company says its performance is in line with its expectations, with the second half of the year set to provide stronger growth, particularly in its U.S. operations. Industrial Info is tracking more than $7.8 billion worth of active and proposed projects from National Grid across the U.S., more than 40% of which is attributed to projects in the Great Lakes region.

National Grid has just more than $1 billion worth of U.S.-based projects under construction, nearly half of which is attributed to projects that began construction earlier this year. These include the $350 million Blevins Solar Plant in Lott, Texas, which is expected to generate more than 270 megawatts (MW) from an estimated 350,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels, with support from a 181-MW battery energy-storage system (BESS). In November, Fujifilm (Tokyo, Japan) agreed to consume 125 MW of the output, while Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) (New York, New York) agreed to 145 MW.

Other projects that kicked off in 2024 include the $234 million Sycamore Creek Solar Plant in New Washington, Ohio, which is expected to generate 117 MW, and the $70 million Filmore County Solar Plant in New Spring Valley, Minnesota, which is expected to generate 45 MW. These two are expected to finish construction in early 2025, while the Blevins projects is set to wrap up later in the summer. Toward the end of the year, Massachusetts Electric Company (Westborough, Massachusetts), a National Grid subsidiary, is expected to begin construction on a $172.4 million upgrade to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. The project includes improvements to a 697-ton-per-day LNG peak-shaving unit and the construction of a new LNG storage tank to hold up to 2.1 million gallons of LNG for peak demand during winter months. The subsidiary already is at work on the $11 million replacement of a truck-loading station and $2.9 million in upgrades to the motor control center and control-room building at the same facility, both of which are set to wrap up in the current quarter.

The South Yarmouth project is among the projects to benefit from National Grid's decision earlier this year to invest $35 billion in system improvements across Massachusetts and New York, as it seeks to streamline its operations. The company is weighing the potential for at least two major projects to rebuild transmission lines in New York: a 66-mile line from Black River to Marcy, and a 62-mile line from Black River to Clay. The company hopes to replace the existing wood poles with weathered steel poles. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the projects terminating in Marcy and Clay, and can learn more from Industrial Info's May 24, 2024, article - National Grid to Invest $35 Billion in U.S. Power Infrastructure.

"In our U.S. regulated businesses, operating profits [for fiscal-year 2024] are expected to be weighted to the second half," National Grid said in a recent press release. "This includes our New York business, where operating profit weighting is expected to be more typical of historical trends than the same period last year." The first half of National Grid's fiscal-year 2024 was impacted by an environmental provision charge in New York.
