Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--National Grid Renewables (Minneapolis, Minnesota) announced late last week that it had brought online two solar projects in Minnesota. The assets have a combined generating capacity of 95 megawatts (MW) and join other projects from the company throughout the U.S., primarily in the Great Lakes market region.
Both of the new solar plants are located in southern Minnesota, operating within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market. The 45-MW Fillmore County solar farm was installed in Fillmore County, while the 50-MW Louise solar farm is in Mower County. Both plants have power purchase agreements in place for all of their output with utility Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota). General contractor Berry Construction Incorporated (Chattanooga, Tennessee) broke ground on both projects early last year, taking about a year to complete them.

The announcement of the two projects' completion wasn't the only news coming from National Grid Renewables last week. The company also announced the beginning of onsite construction at its Sycamore Creek solar project in Crawford County, Ohio, which will serve the PJM market. When completed, the project will use more than 306,000 solar modules to provide 117 MW of power. The project joins three other National Grid Renewables projects under construction in the Buckeye State, leading to the company having more than 675 MW of under-construction and operating projects there.
Other Ohio projects include National Grid's 117-MW Dodson Creek solar farm, onsite construction of which started around September of last year and is expected to be completed later this year. Breaking ground in late 2023 and still under construction are the 120-MW Ross County and 47.5-MW Fayette solar projects, both in southern Ohio. Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) is providing construction services for all four National Grid plants presently under construction in Ohio.

The company has plenty of other projects underway elsewhere. Breaking ground in November was the Apple River solar project in Polk County, Wisconsin. Heading up construction is The Boldt Company (Appleton, Wisconsin), and the facility, like most other National Grid Renewables projects, will use solar panels manufactured by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona). The project is expected to begin operating toward the end of this year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
Other recent announcements from National Grid Renewables include signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA) (Springfield, Illinois) for the output from the Bee Hollow solar facility, which is expected to break ground later this year in St. Clair County, Illinois. The 150-MW project will expand the company's Illinois generating capacity to 350 MW. Construction is expected to kick off later this year, putting it on track for a possible completion in 2026.
