Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The National Development and Reform Commission approved the Ningxia-Shandong DC transmission project, which will start in northwestern Chinas Ningxia Autonomous Region and end in northern Chinas Shandong Province, on September 26, 2007, the State Grid of Corporation of China (Beijing, China) announced.
Northwestern China is rich in coal resources with a reserve of 2,389.4 billion metric tons, accounting for about half of the total reserves in China. The region has proven reserves of about 303 billion metric tons, accounting for 35% of the countrys total reserves. The theoretical reserves of hydropower resources in the region is more than 84,000 megawatts (MW), accounting for more than 12% of the total reserves in China, and the exploitable capacity is more than 47,900 MW. Based on the energy distribution and features in northwestern China, one hydropower and three thermal power bases are planned. Ningxia is one of the 13 coal-production bases with a capacity of more than 100 million tons in China. The regions prospective and proven reserves of coal are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in China. The Ningdong (eastern Ningxia) coal power base is not only the largest coal chemical base in Asia but also an important energy base for the nations strategy of transmitting power from west to east.
The NDRC has prioritized the transmission of power from Ningxia, and several evaluations and discussions have been organized. After more than 20 years of long-term demonstration, the parties involved have reached a common understanding. After the NDRCs approval, the State Grid is organizing design institutes and organizations to complete the feasibility study reports revision as soon as possible.
