Solar energy is big business in Nevada, and four solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants with a combined total investment value of $2.34 billion are planned to be wrapped up during the quarter. Chief among these is NextEra Energy Resources LLC's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) 250-megawatt (MW) Silver State South Solar Park near Primm, Nevada. Construction on the $1.5 billion project began in 2014 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. All of the power generated from the solar park is being provided to Southern California Edison Company (Rosemead, California) under a power purchase agreement. First Solar Incorporated (NYSE:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor on the project.
Another PV solar project is being wrapped up near Bolder City. SunPower Corporation's (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California) $500 million, 100-MW solar power project is on target to be completed during the fourth quarter and will sell the power to NV Energy Incorporated (Las Vegas, Nevada) under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Outside of the Power Industry, one of the biggest projects planned for completion during the quarter is Newmont Mining Corporation's (NYSE:NEM) (Greenwood Village, Colorado) $293 million above-ground gold mine near Wells, Nevada. The mine is planned to produce 150,000 ounces per year of gold over an eight-year mine life.
The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is also getting into the game with the completion of a large data center in McCarran, outside of Reno. Switch SUPERNAP LLC's (Las Vegas, Nevada) $100 million, 1.2 million-square-foot data center is part of a $1 billion multi-phase data center campus that will continue to be constructed in the future. This is the first of seven planned buildings at the campus.
